This is one of the terrible consequences of a society full of metrics.
In line with Goodhart's Law, we endlessly come up with imperfect metrics to compare how we perform on mostly meaningless aspects of what we do.
And in doing so, we bleed our work of any amount of intrinsic meaning.
This is especially potent when the metric is money.
