Hard not to see this as a matter of culture.
Either way it's a terrible psychological trap — a zero-sum society, thinking that the best way to move forward is to get ahead of the person in front of you.
We wouldn't have made it out of the Serengeti if we hadn't figured out how to cooperate with each other.
